19 Free Bra Patterns (+ 12 more updated in 2023)

Madalynne Intimates offers four free bralette patterns.  I will rank the four bralette in order of ease.

Barrett Bralette by Madalynne Intimates

Description:

Pull on sport-inspired bra with adjustable straps.  The Barrett Bralette is a stylish yet sensible bralette pattern great for first time lingerie sewists.  It offers a subtle but sexy design element of a triangle cut out at the center front. You also won’t get bogged down by pesky hook and eye closures rather it is designed with an elastic band for ease and comfort.  This bralette is easy to wear and Madalynne Intimates suggests layering it under oversized tops and dresses. Madalynne Intimates also offers lingerie kits made specifically for this pattern. It’s a win-win!

What other sewists are saying:

The Barrett Bralette is a social media favorite.  Looking at the barrett bralette hashtag (#barrertbralette) you will find why other sewist love this pattern.  Many sewist are raving about what a quick and easy make it is and that it offers great fit and comfort. Barrett is a scrapbuster as well.  You can easily look through your fabric scrap stash and find what you need to sew it up. If you want a more structured appearance some sewists have even added foam cups.  It has even been fashioned into a bikini. Even further, there are good videos online to help you through the process especially if you get caught up on the written instructions. Some makers found the instructions to not be detailed enough with a lack of photos but said the videos remedied that issue.

Sierra DIY Bralette by Madalynne Intimates

Description:

The Sierra Bralette is a perfect introduction into lingerie making because of it’s uncomplicated design.  Sierra is a halter wrap-around bra that requires no cups, underwire or channeling. It offers all the fun of sewing lingerie without the hassle of tedious fitting details.  If you are looking to dip your toes into bra-making this is a great first time option. The design is fun, flirty and sexy. Sierra is also a great layering piece that can be worn under a cozy sweater or billowy top.  Madalynne Intimates also offers matching lingerie kits for this pattern.

What other sewists are saying:

Checking out what other sewist on Instagram are saying about the Sierra Bralette, you will see that they are enjoying this as a first time bra-making option.  It is a great weekend project for many and allows them to test their bra-making skills before investing in something more time consuming. It also makes for a great swimsuit top if you are looking for a fun summer hack.

Noelle Halter Bralette by Madalynne Intimates

Description:

The Noelle Halter Bralette is another easy sew for the newbie lingerie maker.  It offers a simple yet versatile design that acts as a bralette and crop tank combo.  The high neck front and racerback silhouette with wide bottom band make it a great pattern for a swimsuit top.  This pattern offers adjustable shoulder straps as well. If you are sewing this bralette to wear as a crop top then you may not even need to create the adjustable straps!  Noelle is another great layering pattern from Madalynne Intimates that is perfect for first time lingerie makers. Check out Madalynne’s lingerie kits to find your matching Noelle supplies kit.

What other sewists are saying:

The Noelle Halter Bralette is a popular make online.  It has some mixed reviews but for the most part sewist seem to really like it.  Some of the negative reviews are that the instructions do not come with any photos and can be confusing.  However, for more experienced sewists said they did not feel they even needed to look at the instructions.  They thought the pattern was straightforward so I would keep that in mind if you are new to sewing lingerie.  There were a few sewist who mentioned that the sizing was a bit off. This may be attributed to people’s differing body shapes and the Madalynne fit model not being congruent to the general audience as a whole.

Furthermore, this pattern is great for hacking into a swimsuit and most sewist seem to be very happy with the end result when using this pattern for swimwear.  You can add cups between the lining and the main fabric to make it more structured as well. One more quick tip, this design offers a lining but does not have instructions on how to make it a hidden lining.  You can use Madalynne’s Sierra instructions instead if you would like to hide the lining for a cleaner look.

Raquel Bralette by Madalynne Intimates

Description:

The Raquel Bralette is the newest to hit Madalynne Intimates free pattern collection.  They have offer this bralette as a ready made option with great success and now are giving sewists a treat to give it a go on their own.  This is an introductory bralette that features soft finishes. It does not require underwire and channeling making it less of a challenge but a beautiful piece nonetheless.  It does feature lace panels, front cups, plush elastic and metal hardware. An added design element is the cutout front that adds a bit of flair to this straightforward bralette design.  To cut out the guess work on finding the right supplies for this pattern Madalynne Intimates offers beautiful lingerie kits to get you started. There is also a full video tutorial on how to make this stylish bra right HERE.

What other sewists are saying:

The Raquel Bralette is very new on the market so there aren’t any blog or Instagram reviews just yet.  I scoured the comments on this bralette to find that other sewists were saying this is a comfortable and pretty bra but does lack on cleavage coverage.  This comment makes sense as there is a front cleavage cutout that is a design element. Keep that in mind if you have a fuller bust and want more coverage.

Milla Bralette by Mood Fabrics

  • Level: Beginner friendly
  • Sizes: 2-30
  • Format: PDF download

Description:

The Milla Bralette is a great free pattern from Mood Fabrics.  This is a versatile pattern that can be used as a bralette, bralette as a top, or a swim top.  The description suggests that it is great for festival season (i.e. Coachella Music Festival in California) probably for its hip ethereal vibe. Mood Fabrics provides a great photo tutorial on their site in which they sew this bralette up in lace with power mesh as a lining for the stretch component.  If you sew this pattern you will need to make your own straps which is a must have skill in bra making. Their tutorial makes this super easy to learn. To access this pattern all you have to do is enter your email address on the pattern tutorial page. Link above.

What other sewists are saying:

I was not able to find a blog post for this pattern but I did see some Instagram posts.  Other sewists seem to be enjoying this pattern – especially hacking it. I saw some beautiful knit variations as well as a camisole hack.  It seems like it is a well thought out pattern with opportunities to stretch your lingerie making abilities.

D’Arcy Bralette Mood Fabrics

  • Level: Beginner friendly
  • Sizes: 2-30
  • Format: PDF download

Description:

The D’Arcy Bralette is a cage bra inspired design that can be worn as a crop top or fashionable bralette under a see-through top. It can also be fashioned into a swimsuit or a lighter bralette for the summer time per the designer.  Mood Fabrics has a quick tutorial on how to sew this pattern up. It does require some lingerie making knowledge. Keep this in mind as it is not a step-by-step tutorial nor does it offer many photos to guide you. This pattern is available by download if you enter your email address on the tutorial page.

What other sewist are saying:

This pattern seems to be a hit or miss.  Not necessarily because the pattern is not great rather the instructions are not thorough enough which can confuse sewists.  This is probably not the best choice for first time sewists considering the lack of photos and instructions. If you are ok with minimal guidance then it is said to be comfortable with a great fit.  You will probably want to enclose the seams as to not have them rub against your skin and be extra detailed when sewing the v-neck. This may take some extra practice but will be useful experience for sewing more complicate lingerie.

Lace Wrap Bralette by Mood Fabrics

  • Level: Beginner friendly
  • Sizes: Small – Chest: 32-35, Waist: 25-28; Medium – Chest: 36-39, Waist: 28-31; Large – Chest: 40-43, Waist: 32-35, X-Large – Chest: 44-47, Waist: 36-39
  • Format: PDF Download

Description:

Another fun pattern from Mood Fabrics!  There isn’t a specific name for this bralette so let’s just call it the Lace Wrap Bralette.  The Lace Wrap Bralette is a simple pattern with a great photo tutorial on the Mood Fabrics Blog. This bra does require a hook and eye closure and the use of spray and bond adhesive but it is still beginner friendly.  This bralette is really cute and sexy and would be a great layering piece for a boxy sweater or top. This pattern requires lace and power mesh. It does note that is you have a smaller bust size you may be able to forgo the dart.  To download this pattern, just head over to the blog post linked above and enter your email address. If you are a fan of wrap around bras also check out Madalynne’s Sierra Bra discussed above.

What other sewists are saying:

It was difficult to find blog’s reviewing this pattern or a hastag for it on Instagram.  I looked at the blog post’s comments and found that people responded well to the design although they had not sewn the actually pattern.  The designer’s intention with this pattern is for it be be cute, casual and comfy. It definitely seems to hit those three criteria and could be a great pattern to try out especially if you want to do some scrap busting!

What other sewists are saying:

This was another hard to track down pattern for reviews.  I searched for blog posts but I just found it on lists of free patterns.  There wasn’t anything on Instagram that I could find. Maybe I am using the wrong hashtag?  Readers, if you have made this pattern please feel free to comment below on your experience.  By the looks of the tutorial, it could be more thorough but should be plenty for a more experienced beginner.  I wouldn’t let that deter you from trying out this pattern.

The Bralette by So Sew Easy

  • Level: Beginner friendly
  • Sizes: 30″-34″(S), 34″-38″(M), 38″-42″(L), 42-44″(XL)
  • Format: PDF download

Description:

The Bralette by So Sew Easy is a great introductory bra pattern.  The So Sew Easy blog offers detailed instruction on how to sew this bralette along with great photos.  They also have a video tutorial if you prefer that format. This bralette features light support and modest coverage intended as a summer undergarment.  This pattern has the option of adding modesty cups. However, because of the light support it is not recommended for those over a C cup. This is a very cute, dainty bra that can also be fashioned into a crop top or bikini top.  It even has the option to make it into a camisole or nightie. I would definitely recommend this pattern for first time bra makers especially if you have a smaller bust size.

What other sewists are saying:

I found some really great photos of people’s makes on Instagram.  There wasn’t too much detail about the process but overall you could tell that people really enjoyed this pattern.  It is a simple pattern that is very feminine and delicate. This pattern is a great for beginners in bra making not only because it is a simple silhouette and it’s free but it has great instructions.  Check it out!

  • Format: PDF download

Description:

The Ultimate Sports Bra is a racerback sports bra pattern.  This sports bra is designed with compression in mind. It is meant to be supportive while allowing enough give to feel comfortable.  It also allows for bra cup inserts with a front facing for added structure and comfort. This is a great first time sports bra pattern.  The design is straightforward and stylish and the directions are excellent. Linked above is the blog tutorial from the So Sew Easy web site.  They also have a link to their YouTube video tutorial there.

What other sewists are saying:

I have personally sewn this bra and I very much enjoyed it.  The blog post talks about choosing the right fabric which is so key for any sports bra pattern.  For me that was my main difficulty. I found four way stretch fabric but ultimately it did not stretch as well as I had hoped.  I wore the garment and had no issues with the pattern itself rather my fabric did not stretch as comfortably as I would hope. I would highly suggest getting active wear fabric such as supplex like So Sew Easy suggests.

Hyacinth Bralette by Ohhh Lulu Lingerie

Description:

The Hyacinth Bralette is a quick sew project.  It is a pull-on bralette that is lightweight and has subtle support.  Due to the ease of this project it is great for first time bra makers.  This simple yet classic design offers a scooped neckline and no hassling with underwire, channeling or bra bands.  Ohhh Lulu also offers a step-by-step viedoe tutorial on their YouTube channel making it all the more doable!

What other sewists are saying:

The Hyacinth Bralette is a very popular free pattern on social media.  Many sew this as their introductory bra into lingerie making. Some of what people are saying is that it is a true scrap buster so they don’t feel bad if they mess up the first go around.  It is also a great learning pattern as you can get to work with elastics which can be tricky. For more experienced sewists, they found it was easy to make adjustments to it or hack it into a swim top.  It is also considered a quick sew and is super comfortable.

Maya Bra by AFI Atelier

  • Level: Intermediate to advanced
  • Sizes: Cup size B to J
  • Format: PDF download

Description:

The Maya Bra is for those serious about taking their bra making to the next level.  It is a free bra but it is the quality of a paid bra. AFI offers very clear instruction and they stand by this pattern.  This bra is designed as an everyday bra. It offers an underwire structure, non-detachable straps, different cup options and 2 closure options.  The pattern allows for modifications to help you get the right fit as well. This is a well thought out bra with a vast amount of resources on their web site that would be a great first time “serious” bra.

What other sewists are saying:

This bra is recommended by other sewists to get you started in sewing a traditional bra even if the size and shape do not ultimately fit you.  It teaches you the proper skills needed to continue sewing advanced lingerie patterns. One of the issues that comes up with sewing a bra (any bra) is that the pattern may not compliment your body type.  This was the issue that came up with this pattern but that is not to say that this isn’t a thoughtful well designed pattern. Rather, you just may not know or understand what your body type needs. Nonetheless, it is still a great pattern especially if you have the body type for it.

Jazzy Ro DIY Bralette

  • Sizes: One size (directions included on how to adjust the measurements)
  • Format: PDF download

Description:

The Make Bra Bralette set is a really cute and sexy set that has lots of strappy detail!  It may seem like a tedious project because of the straps but it is still very doable and a great experienced beginner project.  This pattern does have a lot of components so you will end up learning a lot. It is a one size only pattern but the instructions include how to measure the correct cup and band size.  Make Bra has some really great PDF bra pattern options so they definitely know what they are doing. They also have a bra-making course if you want to grow your bra-making skills.

What other sewists are saying:

Make Bra features a Finnish blogger on their site who reviewed this pattern.  I read through the translated post and she seemed to really enjoy this pattern.  Her make turned out really well. It looks even better than the digital drawing! I think the only setback was triple checking to make sure the straps were all in the right place.

The sports bra pattern by Jess Abbott is a great introductory sports bra.  It is a simple pattern with straightforward instructions. You can easily finish this project in less than two hours and be ready to head to the gym. It’s a racerback design without a bottom band but would be easy to add one if you needed some extra support.  I would definitely give this project a go especially, if like Jessica, you don’t want to spend a ton of money on buying a RTW sports bra.

What other sewists are saying:

This pattern is very popular on sports bra pattern sewing lists.  People love the ease and simplicity of this pattern. They also love Jessica’s message behind the pattern of not wanting to spend too much on something they have the skill to sew.  Jessica makes this pattern easy to sew with great instructions and nice photos. It is limited on size but you could potentially make some adjustments.

  • Sizes: 34-35 Cup (per pattern instructions)
  • Format: PDF download

Description:

Lily’s Racerback Bra is such a fun project!  Lily didn’t want to spend money on a new sports bra that she knew she could make herself so she came up with this handy pattern.  It is based off of what she already owned including the fabric. This is a one size only pattern but you can make your own adjustments.  She does suggest testing it out on muslin or an old t-shirt since it is not a professional pattern. This pattern features armhole and neckband binding with elastic inserted or you can use foldover elastic.  It is also designed for the ability to insert a bra pad.

What other sewists are saying:

  • Sizes: Based on what sports bra you trace
  • Format: Self-drafted

Yin over at the Pretty Quirky Pants blog decided to use some of her neoprene fabric and a RTW sports bra to create a self-drafted sports bra.  She details how to make a copy of a ready to wear sports bra and then how to sew it up using neoprene fabric. The result is great and so simple and stylish!  Her instructions and accompanying photos are great. This is definitely a fun project to add to the weekend list.

What other sewists are saying:

Based on the comments of this post, other sewists are excited to try this self-drafted sports bra. If any sewists out there have tried this project out let me know in the comments and I’ll add your feedback here.

  • Level: Advanced
  • Sizes: Wide range of sizes – Refer to Step 7
  • Format: Self-drafted

Description:

This is such a thorough explanation of how to self-draft a traditional bra, it’s pretty impressive.  Even if you are not an advanced bra-maker you should check this link out just to get an idea of what it takes to make an excellent bra by hand. The crazy part is that this is free! Mark explains that this bra pattern is meant to teach you how to draft correctly even if the end result isn’t a perfect fit.  The design is a a one dart bra with an underwire option. Mark also goes over all the tools necessary to complete this project. The instructions, drawings and photos are excellent and worth giving a try.

What other sewists are saying:

Mark’s how-to has helped many sewist in their bra-making journey.  Just reading through the comments on this post you will see that people had a good experience with this tutorial.  If they ran into trouble or had questions they simply commented and Mark would respond (not necessarily right away but a response nonetheless).  Keep in mind this tutorial has been available for quite a long time – over 8 years.
