Pictured is my home sewing machine. It is a Kenmore Sewing Machine Model 15408. My mom bought this machine at Sears well over a decade ago so you can’t find it anymore but I can recommend something similar below.
Home Sewing Machine Picks
Your standard home sewing machine is really all you need unless you plan on selling your makes. There are a few important features to look for that come standard on most machines these days. Here’s what to look for:
- Zig-zag stitch
- 3 step zig-zag stitch
- Stretch stitch – instead of an overlock but this is not necessary
- Types of presser foots: straight stitch and an all-purpose foot
My Recommendations:
- Budget-friendly: Singer 3116 Simple or Brother JX3135F
- Mid-range: Singer CG-590 Commercial Grade Sewing Machine or Juki HZL-K65 Sewing and Quilting Machine
- Splurge: Baby Lock Jazz II Sewing and Quilting Machine or Bernina 215 Sewing Machine
Due to the high demand of sewing machines many products are out of stock. For more sewing machine options please check out these Amazon Affiliate Links:

Serger/Overlock Machine Picks
If you want to take your lingerie sewing and bra making to the next level I highly recommend investing in an overlock machine aka serger. The photo to the left is my machine – Brother 1034D Overlock Sewing Machine. There are plenty of other machines in the marketplace but this is a great introductory home overlock machine. I love this machine and I think you will too!
It features 22 built-in stitch functions with 4-thread overlock, 3-thread overlock, narrow, rolled hem, and ribbon lock stitches. It includes differential fabric feed to sew a range of fabrics. It is easy to thread and even comes with an instructional video, free phone support and a 25 year limited warranty.
Another serger to consider is the BabyLock Vibrant Serger. This sewing machine is pricier but BabyLock is one of the best brands you can buy. Their machines have a great reputation for quality and durability. Check it out here.
I have an affiliate link for these machines through SewingMachinesPlus.com. The reason why I have affiliated to this dealer is because they do not charge sales tax outside of California and they have a price match guarantee. So if you find this machine for a lower price somewhere else online they will match the price. Check out their other serger and overlock machines here.
Coverstitch Machine Picks
You can also consider investing in a coverstitch machine. A coverstitch machine sews a coverstitch (I’m sure you gathered that!) on the hem of a knit fabric and allows that fabric to have maximum stretch. I do not personally own one but I know that people like it because it offers a clean, polished look to their garments not just their bras and lingerie.
You can purchase these machines through my Amazon affiliate links or my SewingMachinesPlus.com affiliate links. Sewing Machine Plus will match Amazon’s price and you won’t be charged tax outside of California.
