There are so many choices online these days to begin your lingerie sewing journey.  The great thing is that many of these options are free! I have compiled a list of 13 free underwear patterns (Plus 6 more in 2023!) for immediate download from across the web.  You will find everything from a sexy thong to your basic go-to bikini briefs to a high-waist panty.

Modern Sewing Patterns #5256 Panties 

Description: 

The #5256 panty pattern by Modern Sewing is a great introductory pattern for sewing.  This is a classic bikini style underwear that does not require elastic. Rather you create the waistband and leg opening trim with the same fabric as the main underwear.  This forms piping which you will secure with the stitch in the ditch method commonly used in quilting. 

You can easily download this underwear pattern directly from the pattern webpage.  Select the size you would like and click on the PDF file. The file should open and you can print it directly from the web and save a copy to your computer.

Cloth Habit Rosy Ladyshorts

Description:

The Rosy Ladyshorts is the first lingerie pattern by Amy Chapman of Cloth Habit.  This is a really cute pair of underwear that comes in 8 sizes. You pick your size based on your hip measurement.  If you land right in the middle of two sizes you can go up or down in a size depending on your preference. This pattern is meant for sewist who want to try out sewing lingerie and experimenting with delicate fabrics.  It is meant to give you a confidence boost on your lingerie sewing journey. This pattern will teach you how to sew with stretch fabrics such as stretch lace and the all important elastic needed in many lingerie projects.

The download only comes with text instructions but Amy offers a step-by-step photo tutorial on her blog including tips and adjustments.  She also gives you tips on how to choose the correct fabric with the appropriate amount of stretch for this particular pattern. This pattern requires a 60% stretch so fabrics such as lace, jersey, or mesh are a good option but testing is always recommended.

Many sewist rave about this pattern!  It has great instructions and a versatile silhouette for many body types. It wears comfortably and is easy to sew making you want to sew several in one sitting.  It also gives a sewist new to lingerie the confidence boost needed to continue working with delicate fabrics and move onto more advanced projects.  

Make Bra Hipster Pattern

Description:

The hipster style underwear takes elements of the bikini cut, boyshort cut and brief cut underwear.  They are a low rise style worn around the hip hence the name hipster making them a great underwear for lower rise pants. They also have modest back coverage but can be designed with less coverage giving the appearance of cheeky style underwear.  

Make bra offers a very cute hipster pattern that is available for immediate download.  There are quick instructions on the download page and tips on how to sew this pattern successfully.  Since this is a free pattern there is a limited amount of sizes and the seam allowance is not included.  It is noted that seam allowance is not necessary for the leg openings or waist since they should be finished with foldover elastic.  It is advised that you add seam allowance of roughly 6 mm or ¼ inch to the side seam and where the lining and main back and front pieces meet.

Many sewist agree that this is a quick make with easy to follow straightforward instructions allowing for several to be made in one sitting.  This pattern is a fabric buster but does not give instructions on how much elastic is needed. The fit is flattering with good coverage and many agree they will make this pattern again and again.

Madalynne Noelle DIY Underwear Pattern

Description:

The Noelle DIY Underwear pattern by Madalynne is a classic feminie high waist brief with a modern twist.  Though this is a high-waisted cut it by no means is “granny panty” status. The high waist is just below the belly button and the leg opening are a moderate cut.  This underwear is a great everyday staple to your wardrobe and ideal for high waisted pants and skirts and dresses. This patten offers a lining for comfort and the feminine detail of a picot elastic edge. 

What other sewist are saying:

Sewist find this pattern to be super easy to sew together.  It is a quick make and a great fit. The instructions are clear and the assembly is a breeze.  The outcome is a very pretty pair of panties that are comfortable and functional. Definitely worth a try and a compliment to any lingerie wardrobe.

Budapest High Waist Panty

Description:

The Budapest High Waist Panty pattern was made as a way to give back to the sewing community by Reka who lives and blogs about sewing in Hungary.  She offers a cute pattern with thorough and thoughtful directions to guide you through the whole process of sewing her pattern. This is a high waist panty that ends about 1 inch (2.5cm) below the belly button.  This underwear is meant to be comfortable and cozy but stylish enough to be a flattering fit. Reka chose this style because high waist panties are back on trend and many ladies are finding that this type of underwear can be sexy and fun. 

Reka allows you to download this pattern directly from her blog.  You can download your specific size and then follow her full photo tutorial.

What other sewist are saying:

Sewist love this pattern for its simplicity in design and construction.  It is an easy sew that should take you about 30 minutes. The instructions are clear and concise and the download is very straightforward.  Many found this to be just as cozy and flattering as promised. This is a great addition to your lingerie closet.

So Sew Easy Lace Underwear

  • Stretch Lace

Description:  

This is a wonderfully scrumptious lacy lingerie piece that is a must have for your wardrobe!  This is a really simple sew that uses stretch lace with a finished edge and a piece of jersey fabric for the lining.  No need to attach elastic to the waistband or leg opening here! This reduces bulk giving a seamless appearance and adds to the sexiness factor.

So Sew Easy also offers a full photo tutorial.  They offer tips on how to get the best finished stitch using an overcast foot but also teach you what to do if you do not have this foot.  They also remind you to check your stretch! This is very important when sewing with any type of knit fabric.

So Sew Easy is known for their well thought out patterns – so many of which are free!  This one is no exception. Sewist love how easy this pattern is and the thorough instructions.  Not only is this underwear functional and comfortable but it is very sexy! You can easily make several of these in one sitting and have a beautiful collection of lacy delicate underthings. 

So Zo Knickers Pattern

Description:

Zoe at So Zo offers a wonderful pattern for your everyday panty needs.  The design is a low rise cut between a bikini and hipster style underwear.  This is meant to be a scrap buster or a way to upcycle an old t-shirt. Zoe offers full instructions on her blog on how to construct these panties on a serger.  She goes into great detail on how to attach the foldover elastic but also gives you tips on using “flat” elastic. There are also directions on how to use a regular sewing machine for this pattern. This is a self-drafted pattern by Zoe and although she does not charge for this pattern there is an option to buy her a coffee which is a great way to encourage Zoe to make more free patterns!  It’s a win-win!

The So Zo Knickers pattern have been very well received online.  It is a straightforward pattern that is fun to make and eco-friendly.  Putting those scraps to good use is such a great feeling and an even better feeling when you can make something beautiful!  Sewist love the So Zo blog for her clear and concise posts and this pattern and instruction are no different. Definitely well worth a sew!

Fehr Trade Lacy Thong

Description:

Melissa at Fehr Trade made a beautifully designed thong for all to enjoy!  It is meant to have lace over the hip area and a diamond inset in the back and front of the panties.  This was Melissa’s first attempt at grading a pattern but all seems to have worked out well considering her successful activewear line!  This is a very beginner friendly pattern that is meant to be a scrap buster and take a minimal amount of time. What’s important is that you get to wear it and feel super feminine and sexy!  She offers full detailed instructions to guide you through the process. You won’t be disappointed and if you get a chance to make this pattern be sure to share your make with Melissa.

The Fehr Trade Lacy Thong is the only free thong available for sewist and they couldn’t be more pleased!  This is a very flattering design offering a v-shape cut that creates a very feminine and flattering silhouette.  Sewist love that lace is incorporated into this design and would all recommend adding this to your lingerie drawer.

Acacia by Megan Nielsen

Description:

The Acacia pattern is a low rise bikini pattern offered by Megan Neilsen as a download if you subscribe the her newsletter.  This is a beautifully designed bikini style underwear with great instructions and three methods for inserting elastic and fully enclosed seams.  It uses a minimal amount of fabric which is great for scrap busting. This is a beginner friendly pattern but all levels of sewists are encouraged to try it.  Megan created this pattern out of the frustration of not being able to find a RTW underwear that she really liked. She was inspired to create an everyday piece that was comfortable and had enough coverage to avoid those pesky wedgies.  Once you sew this pattern you’ll want to sew it up again and again!

What other sewist are saying:

Acacia is a well loved pattern.  Many sewist would agree that it is a great basic staple to your lingerie wardrobe.  They also appreciate the thorough instructions on the different elastic methods. A couple drawbacks were the sizing – some felt it ran small.  Others were also not a fan of the “burrito” method for attaching the gusset but you can also use a method you are more comfortable with instead.  Despite those minor drawbacks, sewist would still sew this again and recommend this pattern to a friend.   

IndigOrchid T-Shirt Underwear Pattern

  • Level: Beginner friendly

Description:

This t-shirt pattern is a fun introduction into sewing underwear with what you have on hand.  This is especially great for a newbie sewist who doesn’t have any knit fabric available. Birgitte’s pattern is a well designed bikini style pattern.  It offers a double gusset with a clean seam using the “burrito” method. There is also the option of binding the waistband and leg opening elastic. She offers a great blog post with clear instructions and photos as well as an extra post with a tutorial on how to sew with foldover elastic, regular elastic, and stretch lace. 

What other sewist are saying:

This pattern was created and posted several years ago but over the years Birgitte was also available and happy to answer any questions her makers had on this pattern.  Sewist loved trying this pattern out especially to upcycle an old t-shirt. There were also very happy with her product recommendations for this pattern. The pattern, instructions, and photos are all very well done making this a desirable sewing project!

Happy Seamstress Pattern Co. Hipster Undies 201

You will love this low-rise hipster pattern from the Happy Seamstress Pattern Co.  It is such a well put together pattern not to mention the clear instructions and rendered photos all together in a very professional PDF booklet and it’s free!  The amount of care that went into creating this for the sewing community is amazing. More on these panties- they are both comfortable and sexy and allow you to wear low-rise pants without any embarrassing underwear pop out.  They were also created to avoid the notorious wedgie plus this pattern is conducive to all sorts of stretchy fabric including that old stretchy vintage tee that you know you can’t wear anymore but don’t want to part with. One last thing, this pattern comes with two versions – the basic undie with a plain elastic waistband or the upgraded hipster undie with a lace waistband.

Happy Seamstress Pattern Co. Cheeky Undies 202

This Cheeky Undies design is similar to the So Sew Easy Lacy Underwear pattern; however, this pattern offers three styles.  This includes the wide stretch lace version, the two-way knit with lace trim version and the two-way knit with plain elastic version. All are wonderful choices and teach you different sewing techniques.  Just like with the hipster pattern this comes in a very professional booklet with thorough instructions, digitally rendered photos and step-by-step instructions. It’s like three free patterns in one!
